How close are doctors to finding a cure for Lou Gehrig's disease?

The FDA has so far only approved one drug for the treatment of ALS; Rilutek, in the form of Riluzole. Although not a cure, it can help a lot. Scientists hope that in the future stem cell treatments may become a cure. Not yet, unfortunetly.
